Preserving the taste of tomatoes from the field to the table has been our passion and vocation for 120 years. Our company is in the heart of the Food Valley region of Parma, and we see ourselves as an intrinsic part of this region: its landscape, soil, waterways, people, traditions, and memories.
It all starts with…
For over 100 years, Mutti has looked for the best ways to capture the freshness and the flavor of Italian tomatoes. A vocation for uncompromising, all-Italian quality.
On the field, as in everything else in life, cultivating excellence takes time and dedication. We ended up loving tomatoes so much that we know how to take the best out of them. There is no “good enough” or “might be fine”: we don’t settle for less than perfection. For this reason, our selection process is really tough! Not every tomato can boast of being a Mutti Pomodoro – only the best ones.
We dedicate the sweet fruit of our obsession to all those who live their life with the same determination.
100% ITALIAN TOMATOES
We choose only the best 100% Italian tomatoes, grown outdoors and harvested during summer. Our farmers choose the varieties that are most suitable for the soil and the climatic conditions. That’s why all our tomatoes are cultivated in Emilia Romagna, Puglia and Campania.
PERFECTLY RIPE TOMATOES
Picking the perfectly ripe Pomodoro is not only a matter of timing, but also a matter of commitment and passion. The secret is in the experience of our farmers because looking for quality is a team effort. When checking if a tomato is ripe enough, our farmers look at the color, which should be bright red, and inspect the firmness of the peel: these factors guarantee that the flavor and the juiciness of the tomatoes are at their best and it’s the right time for harvesting.
THE LAW OF FRESHNESS
We process our tomatoes just a few hours after harvesting right near the field where they’ve grown. This preserves their quality and the fresh taste of the Italian summer. The tomatoes are protected throughout the journey from the field to the factory and in order to retain all their natural goodness, we limit the time between their arrival at the factory and the point at which they are processed.
Rotondo di parma
Flavour: Intense
This variety flourishes in Emilia Romagna and its neighboring regions. This round tomato has undergone a strict selection process over time and is now entirely at home in Mutti´s fields in the Parma region.
Great tomatoes are the result of the earth, water, sun and time. However each tomato variety has it’s own features and grows best in certain places. Knowing about them helps you choose the right tomato for your cooking.
Plum
Flavour: Intense
This variety is grown in Puglia, southern Italy, and is mainly used peeled. Our plum tomatoes are processed very close to the fields in Oliveto Citra. This small town is just a few kilometers from the Cilento National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Cherry
Flavour: Sweet
The cherry tomato, also known as ciliegino, grows mainly in Puglia, and is as mild and vivacious as the rolling coastal region it comes from. The small, round, and sweet cherry tomato brings character and creativity to the table and offers a wealth of flavors and textures. Of all the tomatoes it most resembles tomatoes growing in the wild.

Datterino
Flavour: Sweet
The Baby Roma tomato, or Datterino, resembles a small plum tomato. The Datterinos growing in Emilia Romagna are ideally suited to the hilly terrain and Adriatic Coast they are grown on. The southeastern variety growing in Apulia is very close to a plum tomato, but still has its own clear profile and features. The thin skin of the Datterino conceals beneath it a particularly sweet fruit.

San Marzano
Flavour: Bold
The San Marzano gets its name from the town of San Marzano sul Sarno, which is located on the outskirts of Naples. The tomato has received the EU protected designation of Origin (PDO) status. Originally from Peru, it was brought to the region between Naples and Salerno during the 18th century. This tomato variety has a bold flavor and a long, firm shape. It is especially suitable for use peeled – and is adored by food enthusiasts around the world.

Parma
In the heart of Food Valley
Parma lies in the heart of an area called Food Valley. It is the culinary capital of Italy, famous for its hams, cheeses, wheat, and tomatoes.
Mutti was born in the town of Basilicanova, a hamlet close to Parma. Now, 120 years later, we still operate, live and grow our tomatoes in the very same land, with the main variety of tomato grown here being the Rotondo di Parma.
The land
Preserving the freshness of the tomato, from field to table, has been our daily work for 120 years. It is an activity that we carry out with passion and respect for the land, from north to south Italy. We see ourselves as part of the landscape, waterways, traditions and the communities that live around our tomato fields.
Valli di Comacchio
The wetlands
The Valli di Comacchio is a series of wetlands and lagoons to the south of Comacchio, close to the Emilia Romagna area of the Adriatic Coast.
While the area still remains the most significant wetland of Italy, housing the largest variety of birds and fishes, much of the land has throughout the ages been used for farming. The area features a saline soil and is crisscrossed with canals, streams and rivers.
The main variety of tomato grown here is the Datterino, or Baby roma.

Capitanata
The granary of Italy
The southern area of Capitanata lies in the province of Foggia, Apulia. An important agricultural area for Italy, it is known for grapefruits, olives, wheat and – naturally – our tomatoes. Indeed, a large amount of Europe’s tomatoes come from these lands.
The people of Capitanata have lived in harmony with nature since ancient days, and they have a sacred bond with the fields they farm and tend to.
The mountainous and coastal climate makes Capitanata an excellent place to grow cherry tomatoes and Datterinos.

Valle del Sele
The land of San Marzano tomatoes
The Valle del Sele is an area located in the southern Campania region. Here, in the fields during tomato harvest time, the tranquil summer is broken by the frenzy of machinery and harvesters.
The largest city of this region is Naples, which lies in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. It is in these volcanic lands that we grow our San Marzano tomatoes, which are world famous for their exceptional taste and texture.
Our factory is situated in the small town of Oliveto Citra, as close to our fields as possible to ensure that our tomatoes are always processed quickly.

Field to table
The people behind the tomatoes
Even though we are working with over 400 farmers, we know each of them by name – as they are part of our family. Our relationship with our suppliers is open and honest, and they each share our passion and dedication to excellence. As a result of this, we can pay them more for their products, which helps them develop their farms further and try new, innovative ways to improve their results and protect the environment.
Growing tomatoes is a tough business. Each year the weather conditions change and affect the harvest in ways that cannot be foreseen. Most of our farmers have dedicated their lives to understanding and mastering the entirety or the growing cycle to ensure the best tomatoes possible. It cannot be emphasized enough that in our business quality is the result of the entire production chain – everything that happens from farm to table.
Getting sustainable with WWf Italy
We cooperate with the WWF to make our entire growth and production cycle as sustainable as possible. So far, we have managed to cut down our emissions and water use drastically, and the work is only starting.
Each soil has its own characteristics: some have more minerals in them, some hold more rainfall. Some tomatoes, like the San Marzano, can only be grown in certain areas. Everything affects how a tomato tastes, and finding the right place to grow a specific variety is a vital step in creating the best possible tomatoes for our products.
Farming
Our goal is to know everything there is to know about tomatoes. We share our knowledge with our farmers and guide them throughout the development of the crop in their fields. Likewise, we constantly work to improve our irrigation techniques to save both water and energy. Sun and rain are our most important allies in bringing tomatoes to maturity; hot summers produce tomatoes full of flavor.
Harvest
The tomato is an impatient fruit. Knowing exactly when to harvest is the key to achieving the best flavors possible. We rely on our farmers to alert us when the time for harvest has come. We are also currently testing new technologies like drones to precisely know when the tomatoes have gotten enough sun and are ready to be picked. All of our harvesting is done mechanically, and during the harvest season our factories operate around the clock. A ripe tomato simply can’t wait.
Production
After the tomatoes are picked and arrive at one of our factories, machines are used to sort them out with the highest care. Only the best tomatoes will do for Mutti products. To ensure quality, our production time is cut to a minimum, and our tomatoes are always processed with gentle and even heat to preserve their nutrients and natural goodness.
Factory tour
How we make our products
For us, nothing is more rewarding than receiving a load of ripe, high-quality tomatoes at a Mutti factory. The tomatoes have now reached full maturity under strictly controlled conditions, and in only a few hours will be transformed into the products used daily in kitchens around the world.
After the harvest, the producers in Northern Italy with the highest quality tomatoes and the best farmer in Southern Italy get awarded the Pomodorino d´Oro (Golden Tomato).
